A NOVEL GREEN BIOREFINERY CONCEPT: Protein refining by lactic acid fermentation and biogas production from green biomass Organic Eprints
Fernandez, Maria Santamaria.
The extraction of proteins from leaves, integrated in a green biorefinery, may represent an attractive solution to the increasing demand for protein-rich animal feeds while decreasing the dependency on soybean imports. Thereby such green biorefineries could contribute to the development of more self-sufficient and sustainable agricultural systems in Europe. The framework of this PhD study is a green biorefinery concept for the production of protein concentrate, biogas and fertilizer from organic and locally grown green crops like alfalfa, clover or grass. After the screw pressing of the fresh crops, lactic acid fermentation of the green juice with Lactobacillus salivarius BC 1001 was assessed as the key method for the recovery of proteins. A leaf protein...

Anaerobic digestion for closing the loop of a biorefinery for organic farming: Production of biogas and organic fertilizer from process residues Organic Eprints
Fernandez, Maria Santamaria; Ytting, Nanna Karkov; Lübeck, Mette; Uellendahl, Hinrich.
The availability of organic animal feed for monogastric animals and organic fertilizer is in many regions a limiting factor for the further spread of animal breeding and crop cultivation in organic farming. The production of these two commodities is the main target of a green biorefinery concept based on regionally organically grown grass biomass, called Organofinery. Anaerobic digestion of the residual streams after protein separation for the organic feed product is a key process to extract both the energetic and the nutritional value of the residual biomass in the biorefinery. Biogas potentials of the residual streams from the processing of red clover and clover grass (press cake obtained from screw pressing to produce green juice and brown juice after...

Influence of the development stage of the plant biomass for protein yield in a green biorefinery. Organic Eprints
Fernandez, Maria Santamaria; Ytting, Nanna Karkov; Lübeck, Mette.
The scarce availability of organic animal feed for monogastric animals is hindering the development of organic farming in many regions. A green biorefinery platform called OrganoFinery aims at producing organic protein-rich animal feed based on organically grown green biomass. The freshly harvested green biomass is separated into a solid fraction (press cake) and a liquid fraction (green juice). Subsequently, the green juice is inoculated with specific lactic acid bacteria which ferment the soluble sugars into lactic acid triggering a pH drop and thus, the precipitation of proteins. Last, proteins are extracted by centrifugation and the organic protein concentrate is suitable for feeding monogastric animals. Green perennial crops can be harvested several...

Nutrient recovery in a green biorefinery for production of feed, fuel and fertilizer for organic farming Organic Eprints
Fernandez, Maria Santamaria; Ytting, Nanna Karkov; Lübeck, Mette; Uellendahl, Hinrich.
Nutrient recovery from organic green biomass after processing in a green biorefinery concept for the production of protein feed, biogas and fertilizer for organic farming was investigated. Mass balances in terms of wet weight, TS, VS, C, N, P, K and S were evaluated for processing red clover and clover grass into protein concentrate, press cake and brown juice according to the green biorefinery concept. The analysis was based on mass flows and composition of each of the fractions produced. Depending on the biomass, between 60-79% of C and between 52-63% of N, P and S in the fresh biomass were found in the press cake, while only 6-10% of C, 8-15% of N, but up to 27% of P and up to 26% of S were found in the brown juice. In contrast, less than 45% of K was...

Organic protein-rich feed for monogastric animals by the Organofinery process. Organic Eprints
Fernandez, Maria Santamaria; Uellendahl, Hinrich; Lübeck, Mette.
Nowadays, the organic farming sector is rapidly increasing in order to meet the increasing demand for organic products. However, the scarce availability of organic feed for monogastric animals together with the lack of organic fertilizers are challenging the development of this sector. In this context, a Danish project called Organofinery is focusing on developing a green biorefinery platform for the production of organic protein-rich feed for monogastric animals, of biogas and of organic fertilizer. In the Organofinery concept, the freshly harvested green biomass is separated by a screw press into a green juice and a press cake. Soluble sugars contained in the green juice are fermented by specific lactic acid bacteria, leading to a drop of the pH and...

Research report Organofinery biogas production AAU Organic Eprints
Molinuevo-Salces, Beatriz; Fernandez, Maria Santamaria; Uellendahl, Hinrich.
Organically grown red clover was investigated as a resource for organic feed by combination of protein extraction and anaerobic digestion of the sub-products. Extraction of proteins revealed a very favorable amino acid composition for the use as poultry feed. The residual 89% of organic matter, as solid press cake and brown juice was subjected to anaerobic digestion to produce biogas and fertilizer. Specific methane yields of 225±62 and 487±30 ml CH4/g VS were obtained for press cake and brown juice, respectively. No distinct inhibition was detected but adaptation of microorganisms in the case of the press cake and gradual increase of the substrate load in the case of the brown juice were beneficial to achieve efficient conversion of both fractions during...

Research report Organofinery protein extraction AAU Organic Eprints
Molinuevo-Salces, Beatriz; Fernandez, Maria Santamaria; Lübeck, Mette.
The supply of organic protein feed for monogastric animals (i.e. poultry and pigs) with the right amino acid profile and a competitive price is one of the major challenges for organic agriculture nowadays. In this project, the development of an organic protein concentrate able to substitute the soybean protein while competing with the current market prices is assessed. The product is developed from red clover biomass, using a sustainable technology without the use of inorganic acids or organic solvents. It also contains some lactic acid, which is supposed to be beneficial for the monogastric livestock. The quality of this protein concentrate is evaluated in terms of amino acid composition. The suitability of the obtained product as feedstock for poultry...
